El Departamento de Servicios de Salud del condado de Suffolk emitió este martes una advertencia para evitar bañarse y tener contacto con el agua en 60 playas, debido a las fuertes lluvias registradas en la región y al posible aumento de los niveles de bacterias.
La medida afecta playas ubicadas dentro y alrededor de varias bahías de la costa norte, entre ellas Cold Spring Harbor, Huntington Harbor y Huntington Bay, Centerport Harbor, Northport Harbor y Northport Bay, el complejo de Port Jefferson Harbor y Stony Brook Harbor. También incluye sectores de la costa norte de Great South Bay, Sag Harbor y playas de Long Island Sound directamente afectadas por descargas cercanas de aguas pluviales.
De acuerdo con las autoridades sanitarias, la advertencia fue emitida ante la posibilidad de que las concentraciones de bacterias en estas aguas superen los estándares establecidos por el estado de Nueva York.
Las playas incluidas se encuentran en áreas particularmente sensibles a la escorrentía generada por las lluvias. El agua que fluye desde calles, terrenos y afluentes cercanos puede transportar contaminantes hasta las zonas de baño. Además, algunas de estas playas están localizadas en bahías relativamente cerradas donde el intercambio de agua provocado por las mareas es limitado.
Las autoridades de salud recomiendan suspender la natación y cualquier otra actividad que implique contacto con el agua hasta que hayan transcurrido dos ciclos consecutivos de marea después de que termine la lluvia, un periodo de al menos 24 horas.
Según el Departamento de Salud, la advertencia relacionada con las lluvias está prevista para ser levantada el jueves 3 de septiembre a las 7 de la mañana, siempre que las condiciones permitan determinar que las aguas son nuevamente seguras.
Además de las 60 playas bajo advertencia preventiva, otras tres permanecen cerradas para nadar debido a niveles elevados de bacterias: Huntington Beach Community Association, Valley Grove Beach en Eatons Neck y Tides Beach en Rocky Point.
